Grocery List January 1936

Here is my dad's grocery list. I don't know if it's what stuff cost or what he bought. You decide. Because it is all alphabetized, I'm wondering if he just went to the store and priced stuff? That would be really weird because I never in my life knew him to go to the only store on the reservation, which was owned by his friend! Or was it their budget for the preceding December or the whole year?

Apples .75 Apple Butter .15 Bread $1.60 Beans .50 Butter $1.26 Baking Powder .25
Coffee $1.25 Cheese .50 Choreboy .10 Candy .10 Cookies .30 Corn Beef .20
Cereal .15 Corn .25 Cigarettes .15 Cigars 2 for .55 Cool Aid .40 Cake .25

(He must have given up the cigars, I never knew him to smoke one. Regarding the tweezers, he shaved, but on the margins of his diligently read newspapers, there were always whiskers that he plucked out with tweezers as he read. I would guess from the price of the milk, it wasn't purchased by the gallon - m)

Dad's Diary June 30

1934 - A fire. Mug and I went fishing up Warm Springs. Went over and Reva sewed on a button for me.

1935 - Just loafed around camp. Wallace and I went down Beaver Creek a ways but didn't see any salmon.

Then he has a note that says "1934 - I might forget and do this next year. Time sure is going fast. 1935 - I didn't."
(I don't know what it means. I will pick up on his next diary when I round it up - m.)

It is kind of cool today - not a bike riding day. We are still watering trees and pulling weeds, but we have just about caught up - for now.

2009
Yesterday we took the War Pony to The Dalles, about 90 miles north of here. It's our favorite short trip to take for a hamburger at Burgerville. We splurged on bacon cheeseburgers - they are the best there, and the ride is pretty fine as well.

Parts of the old road from Warm Springs to The Dalles can still be seen. My parents traveled both roads quite often. Mom was raised at times on the Columbia River where her family lived for probably hundreds of years. We went there for years until it was flooded by The Dalles Dam in 1958. Then the trips to The Dalles were mostly for buying fish, not catching them. History - it's mightly interesting . . . . .

The weather was great. It's been sultry, but yesterday the temperature was in the upper 70's F, just right. I wore my new motorcycle gloves the Lone Ranger got me for my birthday. They are perforated, cooler than my riding to Laughlin in the winter gloves.

2009
After all the recent rain storms (much like 1934!), the weeds are growing. We've been spending lots of time spraying and pulling. This afternoon we took the War Pony to town to the DQ for an ice cream break. We hardly know what do to in the evenings, with the NBA all out fishing now. At least it's light in the evening so we can work outside until dark, but who wants to!

My Dad fished a lot, not only because he enjoyed it, but he had a growing family to feed and not much money to do it with. Thankfully, they always lived near a river and or creek so the fish were always available.

One time, when I was quite small, he took me fishing to Seekseequa Creek, which flows into the Deschutes. When I saw the little stream, I told him I didn't want to fish there, I wanted to catch a BIG fish. He said if I didn't catch a big fish there, we would go down to the Deschutes. I put in my line in this tiny stream and caught a BIG fish! I couldn't believe it - who needs a big river when your father knows where all the BIG fish are! I was one happy camper, one who knew her father knew everything about fish!

Cadence came to visit!

Cadence Catherine Tippett came to visit. Here she is with Grandpa!

When Greg and Shilo married three years ago, we planted this vine. It is doing well, as are they.

We held a party at the Cove State Park. There will be pictures of others in the family, but here and now are Shawnele and her daughter, Mesa, on the left and Shilo's daughter, Cadence, on the right. What a bunch of beauties!

My computer is talking to me - it's say that we will have a shutdown at 12 Noon, which is in about 17 minutes. I'll get back on here later (I hope) and will furnish more pictures of the party at the park, and with the Honorees. I appreciate the warning. See you later.

- - - - -
2009 - The house he is putting the ceiling on is a little shack. I'll get a picture, it's partially still standing. It was a little room on the side of an old barn. He took that from the barn and started our 'little house.' After work every day, he would walk down to the mill, about 2 miles from our house, and pack a piece of lumber back to add on to the 'house.' Eventually it housed 5 kids and our parents until he obtained a government job and we moved a couple 'blocks (for lack of a better word)' to a bigger house. The Little House had a littler house out back between the house and Shitike Creek for a toilet. We had running water but since there was no insulation, it froze up quite frequently. We had some electricity. It's interesting to see his wiring job now. It was built on a downhill slope, so the back of the house is built up on bricks and rocks. Mom said she used to lose Dan Macy and Dad as they were adding on to the house and find them out there cooling off and resting! There was a wood stove and two "bedrooms". It was definitely a house built by love and was filled with it!

June 10, 2009
The reservation consists of 640,000 acres and is bordered on the west by the Cascade Mountain Range. This is where my father spent so much time. Old Mill, Badger, Beaver - all these creeks are on the west side of the reservation. The CCCs were building dams, roads, improving access on the west side. My dad, although he was from Alaska, became very familiar with all these areas. That knowledge, and my mother being from here, led him to stay in Warm Springs and eventually retire from the Bureau of Indian Affairs as the Fire Control Officer.

He knew every creek and road on the reservation and even had a spring named after him, "Courtney Spring" - I'll try to find it this year and get a picture for us.

2009
Yesterday my sister, I haven't seen her since last year, came by with her husband. We sat around visiting, and eating cake. We talked about something that happened over 60 years ago. I thought it was something I remembered, but what I remembered wasn't exactly what happened.

We spent the summer on the Eagle Butte Fire Lookout. It is located just a few miles north of the Agency and is very, very HOT in the summer. Rattlesnakes hung out in any shade they could find, including under our water tank. She was about 7 so our older brother must have been about 9, leaving me to be about 1, so what could I remember! Anyway, she said there was a tire swing tied to a juniper tree. She was sitting in the tire as my brother twisted it around and around. As he let the tire go, as she was 'unwinding', her long hair was caught in the rope. My quick-thinking brother grabbed her and held her up as they both screamed for our mother. Eagle Butte tower was quite tall so it took her a while to come down.

Mom ran to the house, grabbed a butcher knife and headed for the kids. My sis told me that was almost as scarey as the hair twist - seeing her mother run at her with a butcher knife! Mom cut the rope just above where the hair was twisted into it. Gloria always wears her hair short now.

I had heard this story so long that I thought I remembered it but I couldn't have because if she was 7, I would have been 1. After the Eagle Butte Lookout, Mom started spending summers at Shitike Butte Lookout. I remember that one well, I spent many a summer there. We had a tire swing tied to the tower. That was the swing I recalled, but she said that wasn't it. She should know!

Mom was pretty good with a knife! One time she was cutting vegetables for a salad. My other brother was watching her. She asked him if he was interested in making a salad. He said "No, I want to see you cut your hand." She chased him outside and around the house with the knife. What a woman - what a brother!

Dad was the Fire Control Officer so he stayed back in Warm Springs, about 20 miles away. Since Mom couldn't drive, we usually just stayed up on the lookout all summer long. Dad would come to visit us when there was no threat of fire. He ALWAYS brought books and magazines and tested us after we had time to read them. Read, read, read! Mavis

June 4, 2009

We took the HOG to Madras for lunch at Mazatlan. The grilled chicken salad is the best there! Then we went over to the DQ for ice cream. The weather was very nice - shirt sleeve weather, maybe mid-70's. We had a great ride. I noticed that the snow is off Black Butte and Lionshead - time to plant!

I had a meeting to go to, so we were home by 2 PM. About one-half hour after we arrived home, a huge storm struck! We had no idea it was coming! I could hear the wind chines blasting away. I looked outside and the rain was pelting down sideways. I went out to call Puff and here she came, running so fast she ran right past the door! I called her and she came tearing back right into the house, down the hallway and into the bathroom in the back of the house - the only room that doesn't have windows! The plastic swimming pool, for the dogs, went flying away. There was lightning and thunder - it all lasted for about 1/2 hour. There might have been a witch riding her bicycle as well! My daughter in Terrebonne reported that they had hail which knocked down her tomato plants. For some reason, the hail in the central Oregon region can be treacherous to the crops. It's wiped out farmers' crops more than once. The Warm Springs area does not usually get hail like that.

1935 - Went down to the Agency after my check but didn't get it. Sure was hot today. Went to Pritchard's meeting in evening.

1936 - Digging ditches by the dairy barn. Went fishing this evening and caught two small trout in the creek.

1937 - Still painting. Was warm today. They put in a new turbine in the power house.

1938 - Was hot. Fished in the drift below the Butte but no luck. Sissy can set herself up now. (My oldest sister - m)

Note (06/04/09): Where the dairy barn used to be is now where the Utilities Department is in Warm Springs. Where the baseball fields are used to be the fields where the dairy cows were. Pete, Pudge and I were wading in Shitike Creek, maybe about 1950, when our dog Spike started chasing the milk cows. Mr. White, the dairy man, came after us on his horse, with his rifle. We beat feet back home in record time. He never came to our house, but we did see his horse standing outside the police station!

I'm guessing, but not sure, that according to my dad 75 years ago, this must have been the start of Global Warming (now Climate Change). Of course, he was from Alaska so 'hot' is all relative!

Also, my dad was at the Old Mill CCC, my mom (before their marriage) was cooking at the HeHe CCC. Later, when they married and started their family, they lived at the HeHe camp.

I went to town with my sis-in-law. Her husband, my brother, had surgery a couple weeks ago and is doing much better now. We ran errands in town, stopped for a cup of coffee, visited, shopped, bought groceries. It's always a pleasure to spend time with her. It is warm and muggy here today. The cat is out hiding in the shade somewhere. Lots of roses are blooming, maybe I will go pull some weeds so I can take pictures for you!
