Here is my dad's grocery list. I don't know if it's what stuff cost or what he bought. You decide. Because it is all alphabetized, I'm wondering if he just went to the store and priced stuff? That would be really weird because I never in my life knew him to go to the only store on the reservation, which was owned by his friend! Dad's Diary June 30
1934 - A fire. Mug and I went fishing up Warm Springs. Went over and Reva sewed on a button for me.
1935 - Just loafed around camp. Wallace and I went down Beaver Creek a ways but didn't see any salmon.
19365 - Still digging. Kay went to Redmond with Stanley for groceries.
1937 - Packed our things. Went to the show "Pepper" visited Guerins after show.
1938 - Worked on the ceiling today. Cool and cloudy.
Then he has a note that says "1934 - I might forget and do this next year. Time sure is going fast. 1935 - I didn't."
(I don't know what it means. I will pick up on his next diary when I round it up - m.)

It is kind of cool today - not a bike riding day. We are still watering trees and pulling weeds, but we have just about caught up - for now.

Dad's Diary June 28 and 29
June 28
1934 - Worked till the lite went out last nite at one. Chee Chie-boo was here in PM and brought over some candy after supper.
1935 - Drove Ted Metcalf's truck from the rock crusher to camp. There is going to be a CCC at Simnasho. White people.
1936 - Caught 30 fish in the creek. Was warm today.
1937 - We are going to HeHe Butte lookout. Looked it over via Old Mill and Schoolie. Had an awful electric storm. Hot.
1938 - Finished the gates. Just took it easy. Went over to Jessie's after supper.
June 29
1934 - Worked on time slips all nite. Went riding in afternoon with Reva and Ethel. Fred left.
1935 - Pay day. Drove a government Ford dump truck to the Agency and brought Catherine back. It sure is good to have her with me.
1936 - Got my fish pole and jeans today. Warm but windy.
1937 - Hi (Hiram Smith, Mom's dad's brother - m) and I fished at HeHe and Old Mill Creek. No fish. Was cooler today. Got paid $38.40. Rover has sore feet. (Rover was a wonderful dog. He looked like a black collie. Dad had him before they were married. I believe he lived to be about 17, so most of us 'kids' got to know and love him - m)
1938 - Spent most of the day on the Butte. Got a young duck this evening.

Yesterday we took the War Pony to The Dalles, about 90 miles north of here. It's our favorite short trip to take for a hamburger at Burgerville. We splurged on bacon cheeseburgers - they are the best there, and the ride is pretty fine as well.
Parts of the old road from Warm Springs to The Dalles can still be seen. My parents traveled both roads quite often. Mom was raised at times on the Columbia River where her family lived for probably hundreds of years. We went there for years until it was flooded by The Dalles Dam in 1958. Then the trips to The Dalles were mostly for buying fish, not catching them. History - it's mightly interesting . . . . .
The weather was great. It's been sultry, but yesterday the temperature was in the upper 70's F, just right. I wore my new motorcycle gloves the Lone Ranger got me for my birthday. They are perforated, cooler than my riding to Laughlin in the winter gloves.

Dad's Diary June 26 and 27
June 26
1934 - Shot Archie's bow and arrow. Saw Chee chie-boo and found her knife. It is trying to clear up at bad time. (I have Dad's little carved canoe that Archie made for him - it was one of Dad's treasured items -m)
1935 - Batching with Hi Smith. Making out time slips. Hot, called up Slim at Mt. Wilson.
1936 - Caught 18 fish in the creek this evening. Folks went to Gresham. (This was probably strawberry picking time in the valley - m)
1937 - Walt, Amiel and I fished up at Mill Creek. I caught 22. We ate supper at Walt's.
1938 - Was hot today. Just laid around. Wrote home and to Bill Smith.
June 27
1934 - Got up early this AM. Working on time slips. Buck, Jack and I went hunting. Rain. Lost some pencils.

1934 - Was across to the ranger station most of the day. Ate dinner there. A storm coming up.
1935 - Stayed at Agency last night. Came up to Beaver and then back to Agency tonight.
1936 - Kay and I saw the show "Escapade," was warm today.
1937 - On the 22nd Washington U made another clean sweep at Poughkeepsie. Fished at Blue Lake but no luck.
1938 - Started to make 5 more ____ but had to spend most of the day on the lookout. Caught 9 fish this evening.
June 25
1934 - We had an electric and rain storm. Saw Chee Chie-boo in the evening. Making out time slips now.
1935 - Ted Metcalf hauled our stuff to Beaver. I am time keeper at 3.75 a day.
1936 - Caught 5 fish with Amiel this evening.
1937 - Went over to Mike's for raspberries. Was warm today. Painted the window sills. (I have some of the old window frames from the Little House - m.)
1938 - Took it easy today. Visited Bart this evening. Alfred and Massey ate lunch here.

After all the recent rain storms (much like 1934!), the weeds are growing. We've been spending lots of time spraying and pulling. This afternoon we took the War Pony to town to the DQ for an ice cream break. We hardly know what do to in the evenings, with the NBA all out fishing now. At least it's light in the evening so we can work outside until dark, but who wants to!
My Dad fished a lot, not only because he enjoyed it, but he had a growing family to feed and not much money to do it with. Thankfully, they always lived near a river and or creek so the fish were always available.
One time, when I was quite small, he took me fishing to Seekseequa Creek, which flows into the Deschutes. When I saw the little stream, I told him I didn't want to fish there, I wanted to catch a BIG fish. He said if I didn't catch a big fish there, we would go down to the Deschutes. I put in my line in this tiny stream and caught a BIG fish! I couldn't believe it - who needs a big river when your father knows where all the BIG fish are! I was one happy camper, one who knew her father knew everything about fish!

1934 - Drove Hgs car up P-16, then at Bear Springs, saw Reva. 12 new men in the morning plus guests.
1935 - Ed told me I would be transferred to PWA Beaver Creek Monday.
1936 - Was warm but windy today. Still digging by Massey's store.
1937 - Too much rain for dipping last night. Drove to The Dalles through Wapinitia. Pretty muddy. Got strawberries. Joe Louis KO'd Brad.
1938 - Rode out to Mill Creek and met Chester with our battery. Joe Lois KO'd M. Schmelling in less than a round.
June 23
1934 - Went to Madras with Ernie and Ted, got Paul (?) on the way back. Saw Chee Chie Boo before we left. 111 men in camp.
1935 - Stanley moved Kay's and my junk to the agency today.
1936 - Caught 19 fish in the creek. Wash. U won the Poughopee Regetta. Kay and Baby went to Redmond with Stanle(her brother who died about in the late 1950's - m).
1937 - Bought a salmon and got some cherries. Walt and I fished at Mill Creek and Warm Springs River. Got 5.
1938 - Went to agency this evening and saw Dan's new baby.
