May & June, 1930, Dad's Diary

The day I am working on this diary is April 25, 2011.  Not sure if this is where I left off; hope so.

5/1/30 - I attended the May Day exercises.
5/2 - I listened to Shep's radio.
5/3 - We went out eating.
5/4 - We had dress parade at 6:00 PM.  I played 1st cornet in the band.
5/5 - We had body inspecion.  I'm O.K.
5/6 - Mr. Downie sent Robair, Birdlegs and I out of the dining hall for having our shirts unbuttoned at breakfast.
5/7 - We had dress parade.
5/8 - The band went to Salem and played at the Armory.
5/9 - Listened to Shep's radio.
5/10 - I saw a show at Chemawa "Conquest."
5/11 - We had dress parade at 6:00.
5/12 - I am janitor by Mr. Fisher's room.
5/13 - Nothing interesting happened.
5/14 - Our rooms are inspected.  I took cornet lessons from Mr. Kunkel.
5/15 - We had to drill after supper.  Bill, Birdlegs and I went for a walk down towards the O.E.
5/16 - I weigh 114 pounds.
5/17 - I visited Alva in the lawn social.
5/18 - We had dress parade.  B ill and I stayed up late in my 'study'
5/19 - Birdlegs fell out of a tree down by the mint field.
5/20.  Everett Uail (sp) my roommate went to the hospitaql and is confined there.
5/21 - Supt. Blair of Haskell spoke to us (the student body) in the auditorium.
5/22 - Last day of school.
5/23 - I took my first examination, which was English.
5/24 - Chemawa's baseball team beat Salem 15 to 5.
5/25 - Bill, Birdlegs and I cheated from chapel.
5/26 - I had to sweep the lawn in front of B.H. for cheating last nite.
5/27 - Woodburn's baseball team beat Chemawa.
5/28 - I didn't have to take an examination today.
5/29 - I got 80 in an examination on Printing.
5/30 - We had Memorial Day exercises here (Chemawa) after which the band went to Salem and played on the bridge over the Willamette River.  At the lawn social in the evening I talked with Alva.
5/31 - I attended the school operetta "Pickles."

June 1930
6/1 - We had dress parade.  The band gave a concert.
6/2 - Alva and I went to the operetta "Pickles."  My roommate Everett went home (Montana, Whitefish).
6/3 - We had the annual jully-up (?).  Alva went home.
6/4 - I received my last report card for the year.
6/5 - The Indians begin to vanish.
6/6 - Egg moved to Room 31 with me.
6/7 - Rube, Murray and I walked up to Hazel Green and went swimming.
6/8 - I went to church.
6/9 - I worked in the print shop.
6/10 - We put out the last Chemawa American for this year.
6/11 - I weeded mint north of the school.
6/12 - I worked in the shop.
6/13 - The gang went out eating.
6/14 - Murray went home.  Egg, Rube and I saw a show in Salem "A Royal Romance."
15 - I cheated from church.  We had a lawn social.
16 - I moved from B.H. to Mitchell, Room 37.
17 - I weeded mint.
18 - I worked in the print shop.
19 - Rube, Petty and I went swimming at the Deaf School gravel pit.  On the way back Petty bummed a ride for us on the O.E. freight train.
20 - Nothing interesting happened today.
21 - Ed Anderson and I walked down to Deaf School and sent swimming.
22 - Nothing interesting.
23 - Rode down to Deaf School and went swimming.
24 - Nothing interesting.
25 - Nothing interesting.
26 - A tree was on fire in the pig pasture.  After roasting a few spuds we put it out and was late for 9:o'clock check-up.
27 - I picked srawberries.
28 - I saw a show in Salem "The Virginian" and one at Chemawa entitled "The Love Doctor."
29 - The gang went swimming at Deaf School.  On the way back, we had a blow-out on Lover's Lane.
30 - Went swimming at Deaf School.

  1. I wonder what this statement means, The Indians begin to vanish.? Do you know, Mom? It strikes me how easy it would be to write a sentence a day and have a big impact on history...yet I can't bring myself to do it on a consistent basis, so glad gramps did and that you're documenting it for us!
