Dad - 1944

I found more old notes of my dad's.  In his little yellow tablet is a news clipping:  KLAMATH FALLS, July 8 (Special)-This is the first released airplane picture of the Klamath Falls marine barracks, built as a training and recuperation center for thousands of marines who contracted malaria or filariasis in the Pacific fighting  The large building in the center is the mess hall, capacity 2000.  During a special tour last Sunday, 7000 Klamath county war bond buyers had their first close-up view of the barracks.

His notes (kind of boring - Dad was in fire suppression, P will = presuppression.  Suppression was, of course, suppressing fires; presuppression was preparing for fire suppression.

Hauled water to Eagle Butte 1/2 day.  At 6:30 PM left for White Horse Rapids.  Returned at 10:30 PM. 5/23 - P, shop work. 5/24 - P. Worked on truck AM.  Drove truck with fire tools to Old Mill in PM. 5/25 - P. (off) 5/26 - P. Shop work. 5/27 - same. 5/28 - Sunday. 5/29 - P. Shop. May 30 - Holiday. 5/31 - P. Shop.

June 1 - P, shop. 6/2  - P, moved fire tools to Shitike Butte.  Cleaned quarters at Shitike Butte. 6/3 - P - shop. 6/4 - P - Sunday. 6/5 - P.  Moved family to Shitike Butte. 6/6 - P. Set up weather station.  Odd jobs around station.  6/7 - P.  Worked around station. 6/8 - 1/2 P. Worked around station.  1/2 road maintenance.  Shitike Butte road. 6/9 - Road maintenance Lionshead road. 6/10 - P. cut wood. 6/11 - P.
6/12 - 1/2 P to Agency, 1/2 road maintenance. 6/13 - Road maintenance Metolius Bench Roads. 6/14 - Telephone line maintenance.  Lookout Butte, Trout Lake 5/15 - Road maintenance, White Water grades. 6/16 - Road maintenance Tenino Bench. 6/17 - P. Cut wood. 6/18 - P. Sunday. 6/19 - Road maintenance, Peter's Pasture Agency road. 6/20 - 1/2 Road maintenance.  Tenino Bench, 1/2 P. 6/21 - Road maintenance, Upper Crossing.  6/22 - Annual Leave 6/23 - Bald Peter Road maintenance.  6/24 - P - worked around station. 6/25 - P in and around station. 6/26 - Road maintenance, Peter's Pasture, Old Mill & 42 Roads. 6/27  P.  Gas and work on pickup. 6/28 - Road maintenance.  Road along drift fence north and then east along north side of Twin Buttes.  6/29 - Road maintenance.  Finished Twin Butte Road.  Seekseequa Rim Road.  6/30 - Road maintenance.  2 mi. Bug road on metolius Bench.

This probably won't mean much except for the ex-firefighters.  In my later years, I was quite impressed that my dad could fix telephone lines, short-wave radios, gas engines, almost anything, because he had to!  Today, 2010, there are many roads across the reservation but back a ways there were a few and one of the main ones was the 42 Road.  There are so many forest workers and log trucks, you probably could get help out in the woods if you need it, but back then if you broke down, there was lots of walking to be done!
