11/1/30 - The gang went out eating. I saw a show at Chemawa "Byrd at the South Pole."
2 - The Sophies beat us in the inter-class football game. Murray and I cheated from Chapel and played cards.
3 - I t was very foggy this morning.
4 - We had band practice from 6 to 7 P.M.
5 - I worked for Mrs. Turney.
6 - I'm wondering what kind of a grade I'll get in Physics which is my favorite study. (Indeed!)
7 - Willamette's Glee Club gave a program here. My teeth were examined.
8 - We went out eating. I saw a show at Chemawa "Wings."
9 - The Freshies smeared the Seniors in the mud in the class game. Fat Ohles had his pants torn off in the game.
10 - I started in training for wrestling season.
11 - Armistice Day.
12 - George and I went for a long run down towards Claxter.
13 - My legs are pretty stiff today. My Physics grade was good (I think) 65.
14 - Chemawa and Linfield played a tie game 7 to 7.
15 - I got into a quarrel with Mr. Vos Burgh. We went out eating in spite of the rain.
16 - Vos Burgh excused me from the band. Very nice of him.
17 - I went to the hospital to have an infected finger treated.
18 - I guess I'm out of the band. I weigh 120 pounds.
19 - Geo. and I went for a run.
20 - Geo. and I did some more road work.
21 - We had a big feed out in the woods. I saw a show at Chemawa "Square Shoul.ders."
22 - A very unusual thing happened today. I SCRUBBED MY ROOM.
23 - LeRoy Pepion put a coat of varnish on my floor.
24 - Mr. Bent caught me cheating.
25 - I am staying in Room 49 till the varnish drys in my room.
26 - I went to the Winona Open session.
27 - Thanksgiving Day. I went to the Salem Hi - C.I.S. football game, which Salem won 14 to 0. In the evening I saw a show at C.I.S. "Hold 'em Yah."
28 - I find it hard to get interested in my studies after the big meal and football game.
29 - The gang went out eating.
30 - Leonard killed a squirrel in the woods by our camp.
December
1 - The Juniors had a class meeting at 4 o'clock.
2 - This evening Murray and I messed around in the orchard. We just got the H___ cussed out of us by some little Hawley Hall girls.
3 - I had to go out of my window to get to breakfast. Maybe I'll get up early enough to use the door hereafter. I got sick in school this afternoon. I saw an educational picture "Care of the Teeth."
4 - Went to the hospital and Dr. Sisco excused me from work and school.

6 - I saw a show at Chemawa, "The Virginian."
7 - I played football with Company "D". We beat "C" Company 12 to 0. Robair, Benny and I cheated from chapel and went to the kick-back store. On the way back I fell over the wire fence in front of Mitchell Hall and smacked the side-walk, nearly knocked my self out, also a couple of teeth.

9 - I worked in my private drawing room until 10 o'clock.
10 - I went for a run.
11 - we had body inspection. I'm O.K. I weight 121 pounds.
12 - Last day of school - for the week.
13 - I went over on the girl's side with the rest of the boys. I guess Ole' Hauser had a pretty lively time this evening.
14 - Some pictures were taken for the annual. I cheated from chapel.
15 - I missed breakfast. That's very unusual.
16 - I was too lazy to get up for breakfast.
17 - Stayed in bed till after breakfast. I am in the Christmas pageant representing a shepherd.
18 - Missed breakfast.
19 - Missed breakfast. I learned how to operate the sticking machine.
20 - The printers had their annual "Big Feed."
21 - Mr. Downie caught Petty, Elmer, Esiah and I gambling in my room. We gave the Christmas Pageant.
22 - I missed breakfast. Pete gave me a hair cut.
23 - The wresting team went to Oregon City and wrestled a tie meet 60 to 60. I was left behind.
24 - We had our Christmas Tree in Brewer Hall. Also a half holiday.
25 - Merry Christmas. Goosegg dropped in.
26 - We had a half holiday. Went to school in the afternoon.
27 - I saw a show at Chemawa, "Abie's Irish Rose." Egg, Rube and I sat in the balcony.
28 - We cheated from chapel and went out eating.
29 - I feel bady today. We had sports in the auditorium between Reliance and Excelsiors. The Excelsiors won.
20 - We had sports in the auditorium. Juniors and Freshmen vs. Seniors and Spphomores. I wrestled for the Juniors. My opponent Frank Johnson won a decision from me.
31 - Goosegg rented a car and Pettie chauffered for us. And boy we certainly had a nice time bringing in the new year.

Dad's Diary, September and October 1930
9/1/30 - I am still working for Mr. Ross.
2 - I helped haul trash.
3 - First day of school. I am a dignified Junior.
4 - I went to school which I will be doing for quite a while.
5 - Worked for Mr. Ross this morning and went to school in the afternoon.
6 - I start working in the printing shop again.
7 - We had chapel this evening.,
8 - Worked in the morning and went to school in the afternoon.
9 - More work and school.
10 - Mrs. Bent died last night.
11 - I got a shock from my light cord.
12 - Changed from typewriting to character training class. I guess I need it.
13 - In town I saw a show "Man Trouble" and at C.I.S. I saw "Warming Up."
14 - Went to chapel.
15 - More school.
16 - We reseated in the dining hall. Robair and I got some tomatoes.
17 - I bought a season ticket.
18 - I am on Miss White's janitor detail.
19 - Bath day. My clothes number is 56.
20 - I went over to Shep's room and listened to his radio.
21 - I am on Sunday inspection in B.H.
22 - Elmer gave me a hair cut.

Grandpa's Diary, July and August 1930
7/1/30 - Went swimming in the same ole' hole.
2 - Got up at 4:30 o'clock and went swimming. GoooseEgg nearly climbed a tree with the Ford. My folks stopped to see me. They are on their way to Chula Vista, Cal.
3 - Ed. and I went swimming at Deaf School.
4 - I saw two shows in Salem "Trigger Tricks" and "Marmgy(sp)". After the last show GooseEgg, Rube, Art Tomkins and I went to the fairgrounds and watched the fireworks. We also had our fire water after the fireworks. We started for a ride and ended up in Corvallis with three flat tires. We arrived back in Chemawa just in time for reakfast.
5 - "The morning after." I got into a fight with Russell Bobb. GooseEgg stopped us. (Russell was from Warm Springs - they seemed to have patched things up and became friends - m)
6 - Still trying to catch my lost sleep.
7 - I had to wash all the windows in the printing shop.
8 - Worked in the shop,.
9 - Ed. and I saw a show in Salem "The Big House."
10 - I ran the big job press for an hour without using the throw off lever.
11 - Just laid around.
12 - Went for a walk up the S.P. track towards Brooks.
13 - Charlie, Birdlegs and I went swimming at Taylor's beach. After the swim we went up to Mr. and Mrs. Millers' and had supper.
14 - Elmer, Pat, Geo. W. and I hauled a bunch of lawn mowers up town to be sharpened.
15 - In the Print Shop I run a two color job of stationery for the Kola Teepee.
16 - GooseEgg left for Alaska.
17 - I took a cold shower this monring.

21 - Just messed around.
22 - Went swimming.
23 - Went swimming. Didn't come back till 1:o'clock a.m.
24 - I went swimming.
25 - Bill swiped Mr. Bent's car and we went up town and saw a show "Border Legion"
26 - I went swimming and after the swim I saw a show up town "Little Johnnie Jones."
27 - Went swimming. We cooked some coffee out in the woods and ate lunch.
28 - I worked for Mr. Ross piling wood.

30 - We had supper on the lawn. Talked with Mildred. Pettie and I went up town and saw "The Unholy Three."

2 - Birdlegs and I saw a show up town "Shooting Straight."
3 - Just took it easy.
4 - I mowed lawns.

6 - We had supper on the lawn in front of Cranton Hall. Visited Mildred.
7 - More lawns mowed.
8 - Worked in the roses.
9 - We had the school picnic at Hazel Green. I had a nice time with Mildred. Pettie and I saw a show up town "The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu."
10 - - I was examined by Dr. Sisco. Veridict normal. I weight 110-1/2 pounds. We had a lawn social after lunch.

16 - I went on a little spree in the woods east of the school. After sobering up a little I went up town. Went swimming in the Crystal Pool with Rube. And then we saw a show "Way Out West."

20 - We had supper on the lawn followed by a social.
21 - I watched the finals in the tennis tournament. Bud won the championship by defeating Pettie.

24 - Rube and I saw a show at Hollywood "Rogue Song." We had a lawn social.
25 - The students start coming back to school.
26 - My roommate Ed. Anderson left for Kodiak Alaska.
27 - Still on the job.

30 - I saw a show at C.I.S. "Four Feathers."
31 - We had a lawn social. I moved back to Brewer Hall and got Room 31 again. The Honorable Louis Cirmino is my roommate.

The day I am working on this diary is April 25, 2011. Not sure if this is where I left off; hope so.
5/1/30 - I attended the May Day exercises.
5/2 - I listened to Shep's radio.
5/3 - We went out eating.
5/4 - We had dress parade at 6:00 PM. I played 1st cornet in the band.
5/5 - We had body inspecion. I'm O.K.
5/6 - Mr. Downie sent Robair, Birdlegs and I out of the dining hall for having our shirts unbuttoned at breakfast.
5/7 - We had dress parade.
5/8 - The band went to Salem and played at the Armory.
5/9 - Listened to Shep's radio.
5/10 - I saw a show at Chemawa "Conquest."
5/11 - We had dress parade at 6:00.
5/12 - I am janitor by Mr. Fisher's room.
5/13 - Nothing interesting happened.
5/14 - Our rooms are inspected. I took cornet lessons from Mr. Kunkel.
5/15 - We had to drill after supper. Bill, Birdlegs and I went for a walk down towards the O.E.

5/17 - I visited Alva in the lawn social.
5/18 - We had dress parade. B ill and I stayed up late in my 'study'
5/19 - Birdlegs fell out of a tree down by the mint field.

5/21 - Supt. Blair of Haskell spoke to us (the student body) in the auditorium.

5/23 - I took my first examination, which was English.
5/24 - Chemawa's baseball team beat Salem 15 to 5.
5/25 - Bill, Birdlegs and I cheated from chapel.
5/26 - I had to sweep the lawn in front of B.H. for cheating last nite.
5/27 - Woodburn's baseball team beat Chemawa.
5/28 - I didn't have to take an examination today.
5/29 - I got 80 in an examination on Printing.
5/30 - We had Memorial Day exercises here (Chemawa) after which the band went to Salem and played on the bridge over the Willamette River. At the lawn social in the evening I talked with Alva.

June 1930

6/2 - Alva and I went to the operetta "Pickles." My roommate Everett went home (Montana, Whitefish).
6/3 - We had the annual jully-up (?). Alva went home.
6/4 - I received my last report card for the year.

26 - A tree was on fire in the pig pasture. After roasting a few spuds we put it out and was late for 9:o'clock check-up.

After the wedding . . .
Letter from Grandma Ellsworth, May 8, 1935
Dear Children, Terrance, and Katherine,
We congratulate you and wish you much happiness in your married life. We would like very much to see you both. Send us a snapshot picture of you taken together, if not convenient to get a photo now. We rec'd Terry's letter Monday and were surprised for he said in May you would get married. But like most young people I suppose, you did not want to wait. Tell us how you are situated. What you have in your cabin. Do they furnish your bedding and etc that you need, and you eat at the cook house, or dining room. Tell us just how things are for we are interested in you and how you are situated. Im sending you a little spray of orange blossoms as they are in bloom now. The air is full of the sweet perfume all around the orchards. I wasn't shocked at your wanting to get married, but at the thought of your marrying so soon for you hadn't hardly mentioned it till you said you thought you would be in May. It's very natural for young people to think of marrying and planning for their future life which is all right but it was so new to us that we hadnt thought it would be so soon, but it's all right with us. We wish you well in all things. Hope you get the manager's job. OK. We are praying you will. Suppose you won't know till the camps open, tell us about it. Trust God in all these things. He controls the minds of men and works for us when we ask and trust him to do it. Are you near to any church so you could go sometimes. Tell us what you do on Sunday if you have a chance to get away. Where do your people live Katherine? Do you get a chance to see them very often. Now I'll close. We have been very busy today but I wanted to write before I went to bed. This has been a late spring here and where you are too. Yes, I have the distalate burner going now. Just a little fire to take off the chill. It is a dandy. Besides our meetings and pastoral work I have been doing those 101 things that accumulate such as cutting weeds in backyard, the grass in front and care of flowers the car and trapping gophers. I got one in trap and drowned another out and killed him with a shovel Have two traps set now hoping to get the others if there is more. Must grind valves in car as soon as possible. Glad you have learned to drive. Yes, the Master 6 Chev is lovely but I am so full of Chev. I hope to get something else when I get prospered I have had lots of grief with this 1928 Chev. Dear Son Terrance.
Your letter and pictures came today so glad to hear from you and that you keep well was interested in the pictures some of them sure look cold with snow all around. We are also glad for your chance of promotion. God is good to you. These things come in answer to prayer. Daddy and I pray for you every day and are anxious for you to do well in every way and now I want to talk to you real earnestly about your future. We only want the best for you and it sure gave me a shock when you said you might get married. Listen to mother, Terry. I wish I could talk to you face to face abot this very important matter. I don't know this dear girl so can't judge her. Perhaps she is all you think her to be and in everyway worthy to be your wife. That's not the point. Daddy and I both think you are too young yet to marry, also you're right to have an assured job. And more money to begin on than you have. The condition government Affairs are in you have no assurance that your job will last definitely. $120 per month looks big and it is for these times but suppose it only lasts a few weeks or months and is shut off. I'm not speaking from my point of view or the thought that if you marry you possibly couldn't help us. Not that at all. God will take care of us if you couldn't help us, but we think it very unwise, put it off for a while till you are sure, a wise man don't rush into anything. No doubt she is a nice girl and we will like her. How long have you known her. You say her people are religious. What church do they belong to? Are they Catholic. If they are its too serious to consider at all. I'm glad you confide in us. For we can help you if you will listen to use. We only wish your happiness but after people are married if they have made a mistake it's hard and a divorce don't put you back where you were before. And the bible don't give you the privilege to marry again. I know lots of professed christians do but it bans them from heaven. Dear Terry, you are young and rather immature to know fully your own mind on this important subject. I mean that your judgment is perhaps not as settled as it will be a year or months even from now. Somehow I feel you should wait a while. We both feel like you should. This is it, wait till your job is assured. Wait till you know that Katherine is the one girl above all others that you love and will be satisfied with as a wife. A wise man waits till he is sure then he can safely proceed. A worldly wise man does that. A christian can do no less . Have you asked God if she is the one for you? He knows what your judgment and desires in this matter will be 5 years or longer will be. He knows whether she will be all you will need in a wife for all time. Perhaps you haven't thought of it in this way but it's for till death do you part, through trials, hardships, sunshine and rain. Daddy and Mother know it was God's will for them to marry so that settles all things, stop and think. Consider all these things, talk these things over with her, see if you agree. If your natures blend together, above all your religious views must harmonize. O what sorrow I've seen in homes where one was a Catholic, the other a Protestant in such cases everything is out of harmony. Mother only wants to help you, so consider Jesus, surender yourself to Him. Then He can guide you, natural things can't be depended on to the exclusion of our souls' welfare. Send us a picture of her. We will love the girl you pick out. Our only wish is that you wait till all things are sure for your future happiness. Worldly conditions are bad with no prospect of getting better. Our people here are doing the best they can but it's hard to make a living. There isn't much doing, so little work and poor wages. We hardly even get over $20 per month and last month it was less than $20. So what you help us every month will be a great blessing to us. I'm glad you feel a responsibility to help us. Now I've written quite an epistle. Perhaps you think its quite a lecture but Mother knows the way and she only wants to help you I know you didn't mean you were going to marry right away but don't be in a hurry. Dear son Terrance. Your good letter received OK and glad to hear from you again as we always are. We enjoy your nice letters and the pictures very much. I did not know you until I read on the back. I suppose the bright sun made you squint so bad. Yes, Terry, we are interested in all the pictures you send. So glad you are progressing and working up Hope you get the Camp Manager's position that will be just lovely and such a large salary, too. But don't let it turn your head or puff you up. Just be wise and quiet. Be careful of your money and save. Practice being courteous to those under you and you will find it easy to be courteous to those over you. How is Mr. Ryan and Mr. Tourney?
We are having high fog and the days are cool. We wish it would warm up some. I borrowed a wood saw made of a Ford Model T and sawed wood for some of my friends but it was a poor business. As wood costs $16.00 a cord I thought I could save some but it did not turn out good. Hope to get finished this week and no more of that.
I saw a distalate stove made of an old oil drum that is a real success. I am going to make one this week. We need lots of heat in the house and wood is expensive so I will try the distalate. I hope to make it work. It is cheap heat if you can get it to work. Of course, I was surprised to hear you were thinking of getting married. The mating instinct is holy and is God's plan. Marriage being a life contract should never be entered into lightly or hurriedly. Just stop and consider that when you marry, you will be tied to her and must support and cherish and care for her as long as she lives and raise children and care for them also. And don't you ever let a Catholic priest marry you. Well, anyway, Terry, you better take some time to think of this step. We were in hopes you would wait until you had more experience before marrying. Four or five years more would let your mind mature more so you would be fitted better. Short engagements are not so good. You better be engaged a year so you will know what you are getting. Be nice to her as fornication is damnation to the soul. 1 - I saw a show at Chemawa, "The Grey Hound Limited."
2 - The band played for the students as they marched to church and supper.
3 - Alva and I had a quarrel.
4 - I missed breakfast.
5 - Letter writing day.
6 - I got a haircut.
7 - Alva and I made up again.
8 - We had a dance at Chemawa.
9 - We had pictures taken of classes and societies for the Annual.
10 - Mr. Geo. P. LaVatta gave us a talk.
11 - I listened to the funeral services of Chief Justice Taft in the auditorium over the radio.
12 - It won't be long now till school is out.
13 - Robair got the mumps.
14 - I am on the janitor detail in Mr. Fisher's room.
15 - I saw a show at C.I.S. "The land of the Silver Fox"
16 - Some more pictures were taken for the Class of '30's Annual.
17 - Today is the band's birthday. It is 35 years old. We had a banquet in the D.S.
18 - I weigh 118 pounds.

12 - I saw a show at C.I.S. "From Headquarters." Murray threw a burning rag up on the roof of Brewer Hall and had to get a ladder to get the rag. He is a fine fireman.
13 - Egg and I got a nice wetting down while we were out in the woods eating.
14 - It is still raining.
15 - I weigh 116 pounds.
