Dad's Diary, January & February1930

January
1 - I saw a show at Chemawa "Frozen River."  Alva came back.
4 - I saw a show at Chemawa "The Flying Fool."
8 - Mr. Bent called the gang (Goosegg, Murray, Robair, Henry and I) into the offrice and told us a few things.  I guess he thought we were a bad outfit.  We reseated in the dining hall today.  It snowed this afternoon.
9 - The gang went out eating in spite of the snow.  Rube got his Parish sweather with two stripes.
10 - I got a cold out in the woods yesterday.
11 - We had band practice.  Mr. Kunkel told us of a slaughter house he once visited and about the city of St. Augustine.  Mr. Bent lined us (Brewer Hall) up on the court and tried to find out who broke a mirror in the wash room but was unsuccessful.  Elmer Cline came.
12 - Went down to the ice on a pond south of the school.  Alva and I talked and we had a good time.  Because we did not have any heat Chapel let out earlier than usual.
13 - Although it is the 13th I feel better.
14 - My cold has let me.  I went to Oregon City with the wrestling team.  I lost my match to James of Oregon City.  We wrestled at 110 pounds.  Chemawa lost 62 to 56.  After the match we had a good meal in Oregon City.  It snowed all the way back.
15 - I have some pretty sore muscles and a srawberry on my shoulder.
16 - went to the hospital for strawberries (not eatable kind).
17 - The wrestlers are working out in the print shop.  I weigh 118 pounds.  Goosegg and I were nearly knocked over down by the power house.
18 - At band practice Mr. Kunkel told us about the bears in St. Louie.  Goosegg and I rode down to Piquille on the trash wagon.  I saw a show at Chemawa.  "Black Cyclone."
19 - Sunday.  I fell through the ice in the ditch by the dairy barn.  I couldnt change to the proper clothes for supper so Petty invited me to eat with him.
20 - I am on the janitor detail in room 8 of the school building.
21 - I got a hair cut today.
22 - My roommate is in the hospital.
23 - Nothing of interest happened today.
24 - Willamette Glee Club put on a program for us here at Chemawa.
25 - Mr. Kunket told us of his experiences broadcasting with orchestras.
26 - Sunday.  Just layed around.
27 - Murray pounded on the radiator in his room and Mrs. Bent came up, kicked us out, and moved Murray to another room.
28 - Nothing of interest happened today.
29 - Parish's basketball team beat Chemawa B Team 6 to 16.
30 - Didn't go to bible study.
31 - No school because of mid-year examinations.

February
1 - Honor Roll (Saturday afternoon), had to work.  I saw a show at C.I.S. "Square Shoulders"
2 - Sunday.  We did not have chapel because of the lack of heat.
3 - The power house is not producing heat because of repairs so we did not have school today.
4 - No school again today.,
5 - We had a return wrestling match here with Oregon City.  I was flopped for two falls.  We lost 48 to 56.  I wrestled James again.  We weighed 113.
6 - I have a sore neck.
7 - Alva and I made up
8 - Robair, Esiah and I walked down to the Willamette River.
9 - Rube, Robair and I walked down to Senator McNary's place.
10 - The band played at the basketball game between Dallas and C.I.S.  Chemawa won 30 to 16.
11 - Mr. Downie made Robair and I sweep the court for having our shirts unbuttoned in line.
12 - The band played at the basketball games between Woodburn's and Chemawa's A and B teams.  C.I.S. won both of them.
13 - Nothing interesting to write today,
14 - I (much to my surprise) received a valentine from Alva..
15 - I saw an educational picture at Chemawa (Wild Life in Oregon ).
16 - The band gave a concert in the auditorium.  I played 2nd cornet.
17 - I got a picture of alva.
18 - It rained most of the day.
19 - I weigh 117 pounds.
20 - I can't think of anything of interest that happened today,.
21 - I went to Monmouth with the wresting team but didn't wrestle.  The team wrestled the Oregon Normal Team and lost 42 to 30.  Rube went with us in the stage.
22 -  The band played at the Salem-Chemawa basketball game which Salem won.
23 - The band played for the students as they marched to church and supper.
24 - I got checked out and G.W. gave me a lecture.
25 - Chemawa's Golden Jubilee .
26 - I was late for work.
27 - I missed my breakfast.
28 - this was a perfect spring day.

Dad's Diary September, October, November & December 1929

September
3 - Arrived in Chemawa for another school year.
7 - I saw a show in Salem "The Green Murder Case."
9 - School started today.
14 - I saw a show at Chemawa "TheWay of the Flesh."
21 - I saw a show in Salem "The Dance of Life."
28 - I saw a show at Chemawa "Sky Scraper."

October
6 - I saw a show at Chemawa "The Transgressor."
9 - We had an educational picture entitled "Steam."
13 - I saw a pay show at Chemawa "Alaskan Adventures, Flying Elephans and a Sunday on the Farm."
15 - I weigh 114 pounds.
26 - I saw a show at Chemawa "Annapolis."

November
9 - Show at Chemawa, "Grandma's Boy."
11 - armistice Day.  The band went to Salem.  After the parade the band got tickets for a show "The Cockeyed World."
12 - I weigh 114-3/4 pounds.
19 - I had to shine halls for being on the girls side with Goose Egg & Birdlegs.
27 - Went out eating in the woods east of the school with Egg and the rest of the gang.
28 - The band played at the Thanksgiving Day game between Salem and Chemawa for the Willamette Valley Championship which Chemawa won 13 to 7.  Ed Baine and his folks came down to see Anna and Margaret.

December
7 - I went out eating with the  gang.  Saw a show at Chemawa "Geraldine."
8 - Went out eating with the gang.
14 - The gang went out eating.
16 - I weigh 119 pounds.
17 - Alma went home for Christmas vacation.
21 - I saw a show at Salem "The Thirteenth Chair" and one at Chemawa "The Spieler".  The printers had their annual big meal in the shop.
22 - Went out eating.  The comrades had their Christmas Tree.
25 - Christmas.  We had a nice dinner at Cranston Hall.  In the afternoon I saw a show in Salem "Sweetie" and at Chemawa I saw a show entitled "Simba."
30 - The band went to Salem.  I had a swim in the YMCA.
31 - The gang went out eating.

3 - P.  Brake transmission in pickup.  Wes Walsey came up and towed me up hill.  Changed pickups, grease job.
4 - Road maintenance.  Cut brush along Peter's Pasture - Agency Road.
5 -  Road maintenance.  Same as yesterday.
6 - P. Agency. Fixed spare tire.  Box Canyon to chain cat
7 - P - cut wood.
8 - Sunday
9 - P. Cat at Box Canyon to Agency.
10 - P - Cut wood at station.
End of this little yellow table.

This must have been about 4 years later, Mom was a lookout at Eagle Butte, a few miles north of Warm Springs.  One day Wes Walsey came to visit.  He had his 'cork' boots on and stepped on some of our little kittens and didn't even know it!  m

Dad's Diary August 1944

P - Presuppression - preparing for fires
1 through 4 - P - stayed at station.  (He was often 'on call' during the summer in case of fire, but especially around the 4th of July - m).
5 - Road maintenance - Peters Pasture.
6 - P - at station.
7 - Road Maintenance - Peters Pasture Road.
8 - P - to Agency
9 - same.
10 - P - grease job, Agency
11 - P - Bald Peter Coyote trail.
12 - 14 - P - stayed at station.
15 - P - Went to Camp Creek at 1AM for H. Williams.  Took him to hospital.  Returned to Butte for rest of day. (He would often fill in for the fire lookouts if they had to leave in an emergency. m)
16 - P - to agency to grease truck & pickup.  Took Mrs. Williams to Camp Creek.  Returned to Butte at 8 PM.
17 - Lionshead trail maintenance. (When he did 'trail maintenance', I always thought he was being a nice guy clearing the trails for those of us who just 'vacationed' in the woods; turns out he was working, getting trails ready in case of fire! m)
18 - Harvey Lake trail maintenance.
19 - P - To agency for supplies.
20 - P.  Sunday.
21 - Road maintenance.  Replaced plank on bridge at Seekseequa Mill.
22 - P . Agency. work on pickup.
12 - trail maintenance, Harvey Lake.
24 - P .  Greased cat at Box Canyon.
25 - P.  - Old Mill in AM  Standby at station PM.
26 - P. Blue Lake AM.  Standby PM.
