1934 - No word from Juanita and I've got the blues again. Drove Marvins Ford truck. Cloudy.
1935 - Ed, Kay & I went to the Agency in Ed's new car. I got to drive it around the Agency. Got my check for Massey.
1936 - We have a lot of digging to do yet on the basement of the hospital.
1937 - Was examined by Dr. Freeland - OK. Am leaving at 6 AM for school at Toppenish.
1938 - Bob was buried today but we missed the funeral. Windy and Cool today.

1934 - Pete, Marie & I went to Old Mill for carpoolin. Wrote to Juanita. Cloudy & rainy. Dr. Collings was here.
1935 - Went to the Agency again last nite. Keen weather.
1936 - Got my $3.00 check from J.E.C.W Went to track meet & fishing. Kay went to Bend. Sundown.
1937 - Sundown drove. E.S. - F.s - N.H & M.W. and myself up to Toppenish. Was awful hot today. Met Harold S.
1938 - Cool and windy with flurries of snow and rain throughout the day.

1934 - Got my $36.00. Sent $14.40 to folks. Lucy called me up at supper time. Drove the dumptruck down to HeHe.
1935 - Wrote home and told the folks I was married. Have 90 men in camp. Ed left for Pendleton.
1936 - Rode up to Dry Hollow & drove the Dodge to Seekseequa. Brought Rover back. Watched Wes brand colts.
1937 - Bill Moore is our cook. Studied all morning. Hot. Did field work on telephone in P.M. Arlee & Greinier are here.
1938 - Burned logs. Peel was here and we are going to try and get some land on Badger Creek.

1934 - Stayed at Lucy's all nite. Juanita left home. Walked to schoolie. Harold took Weenie & I to Bear Srings.
1935 - Kay & I went to Agency with B. Sam. Drove the Viking to Sleepy Hollow & back.
1936 - Drove Stanley's team this afternoon. Had showers of rain most of the day.
1937 - More school this morning. There are 43 men here. Was cooler today. Champman moved in with us. Show this evening.
1938 - Still windy and snowy. Burned logs. Yesterday helped haul a load of wood to the tower.

1934 - Weenie & I are in Portland. Found Lefty W. Called up Lu and will see her tonite.
1935 - Went to HeHe & to Beaver Creek Camp. Old Mill won the ball game.
1936 - Amiel is working with us. The Ethiopian State War is over. Saw Harvey Blue this evening.
1937 - More study. Talked over a short-wave set in the afternoon. Show again this evening.
1938 - Still windy but warmer. Wrote to Walt W.

1935 - Got a little swacked last night. Took Lu home. She is lovelier than ever. Weenie & I got back to camp at 8:30 PM.
1935 - Sure is keen weather. Have a camp total of 95. Wallace is back to Schoolie.
1936 - Kay & I rode up to the show in the Dodge. "Going Highbrow." Was windy today. Took bath.
1937 - Study. Did field work with fire finder. Played ping pong with Grenier. Show again. Cooler again today. Compass.
1938 - Went down and got my check. Tried fishing above the falls but the creek is too high. Had a flat.

1934 - Feel tuff. Rain. Pete & I took Chapman to the Agency . Will write to Lu & then go to bed.
1935 - Had a first aid class. Dr. Johnstone is the teacher. The HeHe "Big Shots" were over for it.
1936 - Nice & warm today. Got our Pictorial Review. Lena sent us some fresh milk. (Lena was Grandpa Wesley Smith's sister - m)
1937 - Schoolie in the morning. Rode 8 miles up from Ft. Simcoe to imaginary fire. Was awful cold up there. Show again.
1938 - Rode out to Jackson's. Jesse gave us a vanity box. Tried fishing in Badger. No good.

1934 - Still raining & cloudy. Got a letter from one of the Jones Boys.
1935 - Heard Flynn P. was back on the works. Wallace was over from Schoolie for supplies.
1936 - Got hit in the hip with the slip this AM so laid off & drove the Dodge for Roots. Ate supper at O.McChas E.C.
1937 - Went to school in AM and Yakima demonstrated fire fighting. Gus Delude picked us up at Toppenish. Ate supper in Tygh Valley,
1938 - Charley, Art & I went fishing at Mill Cr. mouth - not bad. I caught 3.
1943 - MAVIS GAIL BORN? (He must have gone back reading his diaries which he did frequently and noticed Mavis was missing, altho 5 years early! It was actually June 8, but at least he remembered me at some point!- m)

1934 - Miss Newell, Kelso Caywood & Mrs. Boyd were here. Pretty fair day. I'm getting tired of this. Chief will be here tomorrow. Won box hockey from reed & Deane.
1935 - Kay started me on some bead work. Kinda windy. Helped Kay wipe her dishes after supper.
1936 - Amiel & I drove team up Tenino for wood. Had a lot of fun braking. Was hot.
1937 - Just laid around & read today. Tried a little fish but not so good. Weather a little cool.
1938 - Didn't do much today. J. Muldoon was through here. Tried fishing on the river, no good. Started some napkin rings.

1934 - Chief came. Won a couple more games of box hockey. Lost 75 playing rummy. (Chief was Chief Sanders; he eventually became Police Chief at Warm Springs - m)
1935 - A nice day. Had a dance here but Kay & I didn't go.
1936 - Cut my wood today. Kay & I walked down to Amiel's. A little rain & thunder. Kay lost her saddle on Little Joe.
1937 - No sunshine today. Sold 2 head bands. Dug a little on the cellar and cut wood. Got a letter from home & answered it.
1938 - Fixed Sissie's high chair. Hanson and I set up the firefinder and phone at the tower.

1934 - A fair day. Elmer & I are going hunting up towards Camas. I wish Lu would write.
1935 - Rode over to Madras in Ed's car for a spring & tank for his car. Kay & I walked up to the ball grounds this PM.
1936 - Drove team in the PM 'cause Wes got hurt. Was hot today.
1937 - Chas. Jackson invited us down for supper. Cut some wood and dug in cellar. Sent a dollar home.
1938 - Caught two little fish in the river. Just laid around.

1935 - Kay & I rode to the Agency to the ball games with Deacon. Warm Springs won from Antelope & Woodlawn.
1936 - Drove team today. Got my check $35.20. Hot again. Visited Amiel this evening.
1937 - Went to work today. Got paid $33.20. Went to Redmond for groceries after supper. At Bend saw "One in a Million."
1938 - Caught one little fish today. Mrs. Colton sold a purse, napkin rings and bought a fob for us.

1934 -Yug (Elmer Raby) and I got up early & cut some wood. Elmer & I went up to Dead Man Springs. Saw 2 bears. Won at rummy.
1935 - Kay & I got a letter from my folks. Chain letters are the present rage. Have 97 men at camp now.
1936 - Kay & I went to the show "The Man on the Fying Trapeze." Drove team again,.
1937 - We went through the hospital before the show "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.," Was warm today,
1938 - Was hot today. In the evening we went after Zelma and visited Masseys. Friday. Saw an eclipse of the moon.

1934 - Was hot today. Beat Reed & Tom Burke at box hockey today. Got Lu's earring ready to ship tomorrow. Lost at rummy,.
1935 - Mr. Gray left today. He said he had wrote into Washington DC for my appointment.
1936 - Got a soaking in a rain storm. Wild roses bloom. Baby got some shoes. Drove team again,.
1937 - Washed Loosley's car today. The creek is 1.04+. was warm again. Fat can stand by himself now.
1938 - Fished along the river to the canyon and caught 2. Amiel, Liz, Dora and Earl were here for supper.

1934 - Elmer & I went hunting at 4 PM. Nothing doing. Lost at rummy. Planning on going to Portland Thursday.
1935 - Met Mr. Welder the new supervisor. H.G. Stanton left yesterday.
1936 - Drove team again today. Was a nice cool day. Took a bath after supper.
1937 - Went fishing at river. Got one. Hauled Fat in his wagon and Avex brought us back.
1938 - Started some more rings. Murdock ate dinner with us. We took Zelma home in H.S. No fish there. Visited Hi S. & came home. (Hiram Smith was Wesley's brother - m)

1934 - Juanita was up here for supper. Didn't talk with her. Lost again at rummy played till 2 AM.
1935 - We had a light rain fall today. Wrote out some chain letters for Kay today, "7 keys to Palpate."
1936 - Went to Redmond & got some groceries at Hartley's. In PM Kay & I went to Bend. Saw "The Amateur Gentlemen." Chan in Shanghai.
1937 - Got up at 5 - rode up to Trout Lake with Peter & Hi. Snowing up there. No fish. Caught 5 at Hot Springs.
1938 - C.E. Chester is back and bought a couple of napkin rings from us. Was windy and cool all day.

1935 - Got my papers for a camp manager's job. Have to fill them out.
1936 - Went fishing. Got one scrawny fish. A nice day. Saw a team of eleven horses yesterday,
1937 - We went to Mike's. Got $1.00 - eggs. caught one fish there. Still working at hospitall
1938 - Still making napkin rings. Windy and cloudy. It hailed today,

1934 - Saw Duke Ellington at the Music Box. Called Lu up but she isn't feeling well. Saw Frenchie & Roy.
1935 - Last nite Kay & I rode over to HeHe, via Schoolie, with Bob Sam to the rat race. Kay went to Ball game.
1936 - Pick & shovel today, A few new men coming into the camps. Baby weighs 16 lbs and 4 oz.
1937 - Windy today Painted Fat's wagon. Ben H. died. Got a letter from home. Kay made some flowers. (Ben was Lena's husband - m)
1938 - Finished another set of rings. Went over to Jessie's after supper.

1934 - Went on a bender by myself last nite. Robair, Ape, Tomato, Tom & Jerry and Birdlegs all went on a party at Lefty's.
1935 - This afternoon, Kay, the flunkies, Goldie & Madeline ride over to HeHe with Urban & his wife, and Catherine Bailey.
1936 - We went to the show, Dr. Socrates. We bought a box of apples.
1937 - Kay went to the show. Fat and I stayed home. Fat tried to walk this evening.
1938 - Not so windy today. Rode out with Gus DeLude to see an airplane down across Beaver Creek.

1934 - Missed my stage today coming back from Chemawa. Lu is still feeling sick so I guess I won't get to see her this trip,
1935 - Was nice warm today. Kay & I wrote to my folks. First Aid class again here tomorrow.
1936 - They used a jack hammer on the works today. Cool & cloudy,
1937 - Was warm today. Hi and I are putting up shelves in the basement. (I believe they were working on the Indian Hospital. About 10 years ago, my daughter was instrumental in redoing the building, now the Family Resource Center, for offices - a coincidence? Her grandfather helped build it, she helped remodel it! - m)
1938 - Gus is fixing up the 80, Caught 6 fish this evening.

1934 - Was at Chemawa today. Got a "Chief." Came back to camp with Bird & Tommy. Feel tuff. Almost went to Hoopa.
1935 - Herb knocked a porcupine out of the tree near the dining hall this morning., Zelma & Kay's mother were here today,
1936 - Kinda rainy,. Beginning to get the basement pretty well dug out., (Hospital - m)
1937 - Arnold arrived this evening from Chemawa for equipment. He will stay with us tonite.
1938 - a nice warm day., Caught 2 fish here and 5 at Old Mill Creek with Amiel, we ate lunch there. Dug roots today on 42.

1934 - Our men burned brush up the Mt. Wilson Road. Wrote to Yug., Feel blue. I wish I would hear from Lady Lu.,
1935 - Rode over to Schoolie this morning and got Major's extrta timeslips. Pretty windy today,
1936 - Horses laid off today. Digging footing. Went to the pageant in the evening. Was hot today. (If I recall correctly, Dad helped Grandpa Wesley 'excavate' for the hospital. They were apparently doing it by horse team. Dad has (and has all my life) a jar of marbles. We don't know why they were there, but he found them during this excavation - m)
1937 - Rode up to Seekseekwa with Arnold, Red & Hudson. In the PM Amiel & I went fishing above the falls.
1938 - Took some pictures of Sissy & Fat. Went over to Amiel's last nite and did the fishing a lunch at M.C. today,

1934 - Had a little storm today. Hear that I am due for a cut on the first. Played the phonograph till late.
1935 - Have to keep Rover tied up because he digs under Ed's house and drags bones into the yard.
1936 -Caught a fish in the Deschutes this evening. Was warm today. Took pictures of baby yesterday.
1937 - Bend won High School track meet. Amiel took our families down to the river. I caught 13. Saw a swan.
1938 - Was hot with thunder in the PM. Rode the grader a ways. Played cards at Charley Tufti's after supper. Hudson was there from Chemawa.

1934 - Rode up on Project 16 M.W. today. I am getting fat. Still windy. Shall write some letters and go to bed.
1935 - Last nite Kay & I rode down with Bob Sam to the Agency. Saw the "Black Cat' with Zelma.
1936 - Caught a couple of more trout in the Deschutes. Was warm today.
1937 - John Rockafella died. Thunder for the first time. Got paid 9.60. Was pretty hot today,.
1938 - Rode out around the irrigation ditches with Chester. via Old Mill. Have to make gates for the ditches.

1935 - Have my time slips allmost finished. Kay & Madeline took some pictures & went swimming. Killed chickens.

1937 - Still making up shelves. Was pretty hot today. Got a grade of Good for Forestry School. Chas. Jackson visited us
1938 - Started the water pump. The water tanks are pretty dry. Was very hot today,

1934 - Robie & I went up the south side of the river - crossed to Deer Spring. No game. Louie & I went for horse ride after supper.
1935 - Kay went to the dance at HeHe last nite & I finished my time slips sure is warm.
1936 - Had a thunder storm this PM. Gerrit Smith was here, taking Doc Pritchard's place.
1937 - Hot again. Got some groceries at Hartley's. Saw "God's Country and the Woman" at Bend. Kay lost her key..
1938 - Si Moon helped me today. Caught 2 fish down the river. Was hot. Lots of people going thru to Chemawa.

1934 - Walt & I took No. 5 & went after Fred at Bear Springs. Felt pretty good. Walked to Badger & saw Stork.
1935 - Ed & I took the time slips down today, took Vic's bible down also. Sure was a keen day.
1936 - Warm today. Owe LaSalle 22.50. Saw a show "Cleopatra." Kay got her new shoes.
1937 - Warm again. Took my speaker down to Amiel. Didn't find the key. Big celebration at Chemawa. Monday & Tuesday,
1938 - I went to the Agency by myself as the rest of the family has colds. John Stacey helped me today,

1934 - Thunder storms. Was pretty hot. Am making out time. Mark was up. Files was late to work. No letter from Lu.,
1935 - Glad I have the time in. It looks like I lose out as Camp Manager & time keeper. It is a little windy this evening.
1936 - Kinda rainy today. We are wheeling the dirt out of the cellar.
1937 - Windy. Bob and Jessie visited us this evening after graduation exercises.
1938 - Drove the family down to the doc. Came back and went to Amiel's. We caught some nice fish on the Deschutes across Mutton Mt,

1935 - It rained today or rather this evening. This evening Kay & I are going to the Agency with Clarke.
1936 - Pushed a wheel barrow all day. The women folks are going strawberry picking tomorow.
1937 - Walked up to Charlie's upper ranch and caught 16 fish. One 15 inches long.
1938 - Stayed at home till evening then looked for flowers up near Rocky Point then drove out to Jessie's. (My dad worked in the woods all my life. He'd bring the prettiest flowers for my mom, I especially liked the Lady Slippers and Tiger lillies, but there were also buttercups - m)

1934 - Memo. Day. Robie & I went over Rocky Point - Beaver Butte - Mt. Wilson & back via Deer Spring. Got a shot off & missed.
1935 - Took some pictures of the graves as the folks decorated them. Kay & I went to the show "Murder in the Clouds."
1936 - Had an electric storm last nite. Kay & I & baby went fishing on horses. Caught one.,
