Dad's Diary 4/10 - 4/30

April 10
1934 - Yug & I went hunting. 
1935 - Came up to Old Mill with the Dr.  Fixed up Rosch's house for Kay & I.  It sure was a nice day.  Kay will be up tomorrow.  Miss my wife.
1936 - Was pretty hot today.  We have quite a basement dug out by now.  Took a bath.
1937 - No pay today.  Fished in the creek.  Caught 7 fish.  Kay and Alice went to the dance.
1938 - Still getting wire.  Drove over to Babs & Josie's.  Almost got stuck in Josie's road.
April 11
1934 - Nice weather.  Went down to HeHe after supper.
1935 - Muldown & I rode down to the Agency.  Kay didn't come up today 'cause she was sick.
1936 - Cut wood today.  Went after the phonograph but it wasn't fixed.
1937 - Charley J. loaned us his truck.  Got a few limbs, ate lunch at Mill Creek.  Simnasho and Hot Springs.  Root Feast at Seekseeque - drummers.
1938 - Charlie, Arthur & I fished at mouth of Mill Creek.  We all got one with a fly. Still getting barbed wire.  Ray Cunningham wants to trade cars.
April 12
1934 - Got flooring for our tent.  Rode down to HeHe with Oren.  I walked back to Schoolie.  Wallace is here.
1935 - Went down to the Agency.  Saw Kay.  She got her ring.  I rode down with Royal.  Kay is better.
1936 - Easter.  We had eats at Stanley's.  Kay & I went riding.  Got the phonograph.  Listened to Eddie Cantor.
1937 - Got paid $38.40.  Took Charley's truck back.  River was too muddy to fish.  Rain in PM.  Charley brought us back.
1938 - Almost have all the wire up.  Lots of showers & hail today.
April 13
1934 - Went down to HeHe.  Came back on truck.
1935 - Rode down to the Agency last night with Royal.  Stayed with Birdlegs.  Went over to Kay's.  Wes is better.
1936 - Back to work again.  Had some fish that ___ dipped yesterday for dinner.  The creek is getting high.
1937 - Lots of rain last nite.  The creek is pretty high and muddy.
1938 -Frost & ice this morning.
April 14
1934 - Gervais, Yug & I went up towards Camas & got a Hooter.  Went to HeHe.
1935 - Stayed with Kay last nite.  Vic, Stan & I & Kay came up to Old Mill, in the Viking.  Kay is going to work here now.
1936 - Stanley Joe Lewis got run over.  Saw Libby about a Forestry job.  Have to see Kallander.
1937 - Got to work in day time tomorrow.  We all went to the show "The King Steps Out."  Rain again.
1938 - Ray brought up a roadster and we gave him the Ford.
April 15
1934 - Laid around all day  Walt & I went to HeHe in evening but Murphy & Moonface weren't there.
1935 - Vic, Kay & I stayed in our cabin.  Rather cloudy today.  I sure have a wonderful woman.  Kay is going to work tomorrow.
1936 - No show.  Kay & I visited forests.  Pug Lane is back.  Awful hot.  Feel tired at bed time.
1937 - The river is 1.08+ this morning.  Wheeled cement for sidewalk.  Hi brought our phonograph over.
1938 - Went to the Agency last nite via the new highway.  Visited Dan.  Nick W. was up & caught 5 fish.  I caught two.  Bob Garron was up also.
April 16
1934 - No word from Murphy or phone for 3 or 4 days.
1935 - More snow today.  Vic left.  Rode over to Badger with Clark this afternoon.  Kay started working today.
1936 - Kay & I went to the show "Man of Aran" was warm again today.
1937 - More sidewalk.  Read "True Lovers" by Rupert Hughes.  Hi Smith took us to Redmond.  Saw two shows.
1938 - Went over to Old Mill & to Bob's for Zelma.  Windy & showery today.
April 17
1934 - This PM Murphy called up from Boulder & said not to build till the first. 
1935 - This evening Stan, Kay & I went to the show "Big Hearted Herbert".  We brought Madeline Brunoe back with us.
1936 - Wes & I ___ by Libby's house.  We are the only ones at home tonight.
1937 - Got up late.  Got a pair of moccasins for 4 pk of Camels.  A nice warm day.  Visited Amiel this evening.
1938 - Went to Bob's for Easter dinner.  Chas. Tufti & I went hunting up around Foster Mill.  Nothing.
April 18
1934 - To HeHe.
1935 - A pretty nice day.  Kay ironed this eveing & I played the phonograph.  Kay is all I expected her to be and better.  Viking to HeHe.
1936 - Raked up our yard & burned the trash.  Evening Kay rode to Dry Hollow with Stan.  I walked up.
1937 - Laid around.  The fishing is poor.  Helped Dan on his _____.
1938- Burning brush.  Nick & Urban were up today.
April 19
1934 - Sweets came up with Florence & Marge.  She has my "C" sweater.  (I now have his Chemawa letterman's sweater - it is in great shape, but kinda small! - m)
1935 - Slept all afternoon.  This evening Dillinger, Madeline, Goldie & I rode over to the dance at HeHe.  Had a good time.
1936 - Kay, Zelma & I rode to Seekseekwa to the root feast.  Rode back to the Agency in wagons.
1937 - More sidewalks.  Drove Hi's car over to Mike's for 6 doz. eggs.  Cold weather.
1938 - Burned log piles along the road.  A nice warm day.
April 20
1934 - Went with Walt to Louis's ranch & to Agency.  Sweets rode back with us.  Had a flat. Warm riding back.
1935 - Dickie Parr has the measles.  Drove the Viking over to Badger with Kay, Bear & Goldie, Madeline.
1936 - Hot again today.  The baby is getting pretty large.  Took Zelma up to school..
1937 - Worked again.  Creek is still high and muddy.  Fat likes his phonograph.
1938 - The river is too high for fishing.  Burned brush & logs.
April 21
1934 - Spent the day at HeHe with Juanita.  Watched the bone game after Juanita sent me home.  I guess I'm just a sucker.
1935 - Went to Agency.  Kay, Madeline & I rode horses from agency to Seeksequee.  Rode back on the viking.  Snow.
1936 - Warm again.  Don't sleep so well at nites lately.
1937 - Hi took us to the show "Professional Soldier" Was good.  Young Massey has the measles.
1938 - Still burning brush & logs.
April 22
1934 - Got back to Schoolie at 4 AM.  Pretty sleepy today.  Rain, thunder & lightning. 
1935 - Snow.  I am pretty sore from that ride.  Mr. Chester caught Kay in a bad way.
1936 - Was warm.  Worked hard.  Sprinkle of rain.  Kay & I went to the show "Broadway Gondalier"
1937 - Nick & I just messed around the hospital.  Hi was here for dinner.
1938 - Fooled around with a tire.  Washed the car.
April 23
1934 - Got 50 men in camp now.  Weather not so good.  Yug & I went hunting.
1935 - Ed F, Deak & I rode to the Agency in Ed's truck to the C.A.T.K meeting.   A new system of keeping time.
1936 - Lightning & thunder & rain today.  One of Kay's hens has 10 chicks.
1937 - Listened to Louie Armstrong after supper.  Started to make a wagon for Fat.
1938 - Had a flat on the way to Agency.  Came back and then went to Amiel's on mt.  Rain when we came back.
April 24
1934 - Walt & I went to HeHe.  Juanita wants to go home.  She is in trouble or something but won't tell me.
1935 - This evening J.D. Kay & I went to the Agency & saw the show "Howdy Andy"  It was good.
1936 - Rain last nite made the slips hard to handle.  Took a shower this evening.
1937 - Went to Bend with Hi.  Saw "What Day Was you Born" at Redmond we saw "Ride 'em Cowboy" and "Nancy Still is Missing."
1938 - Chas, Arthur & I fished all afternoon at HeHe. Art caught one.
April 25
1934 - Took day off and went hunting.  Ended up at HeHe at noon.
1935 - Sure was a keen day.  Kay & I went for a walk up the Blue Lake road.
1936 - Got my check for $21.60 to the 15th.  Got a letter from home & Lu Salle.  We went for Zelma.  Baby chicks.
1937 - Went hunting.  Hooter above Old Mill.  I got one with the .410.  Chief Sanders was with us.  (He still had the .410 shotgun when I was old enough to learn to shoot - what we learned to shoot on - m)
1938 - Burned logs and boards around the corral.
April 26
1934 - Rain, thunder & lightning. Made out time slips. 
1935 - Made up the new time slips.  Weather.
1936 - Annie returned from The Dalles with fresh salmon.  Fixed a box for a cooler and cleaned up around.
1937 - Read "High Noon" by Ruby M. Ayres.  Cold wind today.  Was sick last nite and laid off in the PM.
1938 - Peel was supposed to come up and show us some land but he didn't show up.
April 27
1934 - Yug & I fell a snag.  Drove No. 5.  Rode down to Agency.  Played tennis with ___ & Jane.  Saw Murphy but she ignored me.
1935 - Finished the time slips.  A keen day.  Kay & I stayed home from the dance.  Amiel visited us.
1936 - Work again.  Got enough rain to make the job sloppy most of the day.
1937 - Feel a little better today.  Hauled rocks.  Got paid $33.60. Went fishing & caught 3.  Wrote to Arnold.
1938 - Again Peel didn't show up.  Last Sat. 23.  Sissy weighted 19# & Fat 28.  Caught a Dolly in the dam.
April 28
1934 - Drove the 10 cat.  Got the blues today.  Killed 5 chipmunks with the .22.  Went to HeHe.
1935 - Another keen day.  Kay's folks were up today.  drove the Viking to the ball field.  Time is in "Okey"
1936 - Showers of rain & thunder this evening.  Linton towed the Dodge to Redmond last nite.
1937 - Kallendar told me I had to go to Toppenish for fire guard school the first.  Took a bath.  Got a cord of wood.
1938 - Started in to burn the corral.  Fat can go to the toilet and say a few words.  Sissy has a tooth coming out.
April 29
1934 - Went to White Water with Dudsey & Marvin.  Ran out of gas & had a flat on the way back.  Rain.  Pete P. got us.
1935 - Rode in Ed's new Chev today.  It is getting very pleasant up there now.
1936 - Kay, ___ & I went to the show "The Virginian."  Saw it before.
1937 - Hauled trash to the pile today.  Nice & warm.  Caught a 11 inch fish.
1938 - Bob died.  Went out with Hanson through Log Springs to a fire in the National.  Went to the Agency after supper.
April 30
1934 - Marvin & I went to Agency.  Had tire trouble.  I drove a little ways back.  Awful muddy.  Rain.  Well, I guess it is all over again.  Well I'll learn, 3 or 4 times more.
1935 - A litle windy today.  Kay & I went for a walk after she got thru working.  I never dreamed that I'd be married to someone else by this time, but I'm lucky.
1936 - The last day of the month.  We get paid every two weeks.  Baby is growing fast.
1937 - Was 74 degrees today.  Just monkeyed around.  Got a card from "Egg".
1938 - Coming back from Schoolie we came on to a black bear.  Vic & Kenneth are with us.  Windy today.
